Goeppertia makoyana, still widely known as Calathea makoyana, is prized for translucent oval leaves patterned like peacock feathers and backed in rich purple. The plant grows as a neat upright clump, and the foliage lifts and settles in response to day and night, which adds movement as well as pattern in warm, humid interiors.
Bright indirect light, high humidity, and evenly moist but well-aerated substrate are essential if you want to avoid the brown tips and curling that make this species seem fussier than it is. Use soft water where possible, keep it away from dry heat and drafts, and expect the foliage rather than flowers to be the main feature of this pet-safe Marantaceae species. That rhythm is easier to maintain in bright humid rooms indoors.
