Washingtonia robusta is a fast-growing fan palm with a slender trunk, wide pleated fronds, and a much taller, airier habit than many other container palms. In open ground it becomes very large, but in pots it stays more manageable and is grown mainly for strong vertical structure in bright rooms, conservatories, or warm-season outdoor placements.
Full sun is essential for compact, healthy growth, and the plant does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix that is watered deeply and then allowed to dry partly before the next round. It tolerates dry indoor air better than many tropical palms, but it still needs warmth and enough root room to keep pace with its natural speed. Sharp petiole spines mean handling should be done carefully, especially when pruning or moving larger specimens.
