Vermiculite: Quick Overview
Vermiculite is an expanded mineral used when you want a substrate to hold more water and distribute moisture more evenly without collapsing into a dense mass. It is especially useful for ferns, prayer plants, seed trays, propagation boxes, and other setups where quick drying is a problem rather than the goal, because the particles absorb and release water gradually while still keeping the mix loose. Compared with perlite it is quieter to handle and creates very little dust, which many growers appreciate when building mixes indoors. Used in moderation with coir, bark, compost, or mineral structure, it can soften the drying curve of a pot and make delicate roots less vulnerable to abrupt swings between wet and bone dry. That makes everyday use more predictable.
