Tephrocactus alexanderi forms low clusters of rounded, detachable stem segments armed with fine to stiffer spines, giving the plant its distinctive beaded, segmented look. It is a slow cactus from dry rocky parts of Argentina, so growth is compact and deliberate rather than fast, but the sculptural shape and pale flowers make it memorable in a small pot.
Full sun or very bright light, a sharply draining mineral mix, and deep but infrequent watering after the substrate has fully dried are the essentials for long-term success. Dry air and cool winter rest suit it better than constant warmth and moisture, and while it is not known as toxic, the spines and glochids can still irritate skin.
