Epiphyllum chrysocardium, often called fernleaf cactus, is an epiphytic cactus with deeply lobed phylloclades that look more like jungle fern fronds than ordinary cactus stems. Native to humid forests in southern Mexico, it grows by trailing or arching rather than forming rigid desert columns, and mature plants may also produce large white night-blooming flowers with golden-toned stamens.
Indoors it performs best in bright filtered light, a humid airy position, and a loose epiphytic mix based on bark, perlite, and a small amount of moisture-retentive material. Watering should keep the substrate lightly moist with a short drying interval rather than prolonged drought. Stem cuttings root after callusing, and the plant is a good choice when you want a cactus with a tropical canopy look rather than desert styling.
