Melocactus matanzanus at a glance:
Melocactus matanzanus begins as a compact ribbed globe from Cuba’s dry coastal habitats, then changes character at maturity by producing a bright red woolly cephalium from the crown. Once that cap forms, the body stops normal upward growth and the plant instead flowers and fruits from the cephalium, which is one reason mature specimens are so distinctive in cultivation.
Keep it in full sun or very strong artificial light, warm temperatures around 18–30 °C, and a very fast-draining mineral cactus mix. Water only when the substrate is completely dry, reduce moisture sharply in cooler periods, and protect it from temperatures below about 10 °C. It stays small, usually under 10 cm, but its growth stages make it more interesting than many cacti of comparable size.
