Laurus nobilis is an evergreen Mediterranean shrub or small tree valued as much for its dense, glossy structure as for its aromatic leaves, which can be used fresh or dried in cooking. In containers it usually stays around 1–2 m with time and pruning, making it suitable for bright patios, balconies, or sunny indoor positions with good airflow.
It wants several hours of direct sun, a fertile but well-draining mix, and watering that keeps the root ball evenly moist while still allowing the upper layer to dry slightly between applications.
Regular clipping helps it stay bushy or topiary-like, and mature plants may also produce small pale flowers followed by dark berries on female specimens. Large amounts can upset pets, so it is better treated as culinary but not chew-safe foliage.
