Hydnophytum moseleyanum is an epiphytic ant-plant from Papua New Guinea that develops a swollen chambered caudex, naturally adapted to house ants in the wild. Even without ants in cultivation, the caudex remains the main attraction, turning the plant into a living example of rainforest mutualism as well as a collectible caudiciform. Thin stems rise from the bulbous base carrying glossy green leaves, and small axillary flowers can be followed by yellow to orange berries.
Bright indirect light, warmth around 18–28 °C, high humidity, and a very airy epiphytic mix with bark and perlite help it grow steadily. Water should keep the substrate lightly moist but never stagnant, because both roots and caudex rot easily if kept too wet. Hydnophytum moseleyanum is excellent for growers who enjoy natural-history oddities and sculptural epiphytes.
